How To Nail The Orange-Red Lip

For a warm-weather twist on the classic red lip, we love fiery, almost-orange shades. But what would a strong lipstick color be without the proper hair, eye makeup and outfit to go with it? Here’s our new favorite way to wear this shade: sultry brown eye shadow, a Grace Kelly-worthy bun and an edgy outfit comprised of black and white separates and bold accessories. Get this sexy, date night-ready look from head to toe with a little help from Joey Maalouf and Team Zoe.

1. Prep And Tease Hair

Prep unwashed hair with a mattifying, grip enhancing product like Bumble & Bumble's Cityswept Finish, which separates and adds sheen to strands. Then, tease the front of hair towards the crown with a comb for added volume.

2. Pull Hair Back And Twist

After teasing, comb hair back into a low ponytail and twist the length of the ponytail into a rope, holding at the ends to keep hair in place.

3. Coil Hair Into A Bun

Coil the roped ponytail into a loose chignon, securing with straight pins as you go.

4. Check Hair For Gaps

A little bit of messiness will look chic but check the front and back of hair for flyaways and gaps. Smooth out unruly sections with hands or use additional straight pins.

5. Finish With Hairspray

Complete the look with a flexible hold hairspray, like Serge Normant's strengthening Meta Luxe formula, which will keep hair in place all day without diminishing the height at the crown.

6. Apply Foundation

Apply liquid foundation evenly allover the face and neck. For an easy contouring trick, use a slightly lighter color on the very top of the cheekbones and down the bridge of your nose.

7. Blend With A Sponge

Use a sponge to blend foundation evenly using a light dabbing motion.

8. Survey Skin

Survey skin for problem areas like acne spots or dark circles. Grab the appropriate products to conceal and finish the face.

9. Conceal Dark Circles

Dab concealer from the corners of the eyes, slightly donward, following the natural valley of your under-eye skin and blending evenly with a small brush or sponge.

10. Survey Skin

Finish with a few additional dabs or foundation or a general sweeping of the skin with a fresh sponge to make sure color is evenly blended and skin is luminous.

11. Apply Blush

A natural, soft blush color is key for red lipstick, which brings plenty of color to the face. Use a brush to lightly apply the color along the cheekbones and the apples of the cheeks for a warm glow.

12. Add Brown Shadow

Find a soft brown shadow without shimmer that's a couple of shades darker than your natural skin tone (we love MAC's Espresso) and softly apply with a brush from the lashline almost all the way up to the brows.

13. Fake Eyeliner

Instead of eyeliner and mascara, use the same shadow as a liner along the bottom lashline. Blend with fingers to soften if needed.

14. Groom And Fill In Brows

Strong brows are central to this look so groom them with a comb and fill in gaps with a pencil or brow mascara, like MAC's new waterproof formula, for added definition.

15. Add The Lip

Using a thin brush line lips with your chosen lipstick color and then fill in, ensuring that your pout is perfectly defined and saturated in beautiful color. Our fave shade: Tom Ford's Wild Ginger.

The Final Look

Luminous and rich with sophisticated color this makeup look is ultra-beautiful and only enhanced but the unfussy-but-chic bun.

16. Style The Look

To keep this hair and makeup look from feeling too serious, pair with skinny jeans, a paper-thin tee and an edgy moto jacket. Add color and style for date night with barely-there heels and an ornate clutch.
