Our Favorite Beauty Trends From 2009 To Now

by Stephanie Montes

In honor of TZR’s fifth birthday—yeah, we can’t believe it either—we’re reflecting back on the biggest beauty trends from when we first began till now. From ladylike donut buns to stiletto nails, see which trends made their way from our favorite designer runways to your very own beauty routines. We loved these looks so much, we’re thinking of bringing a few of these back!

See the roundup of our favorite trends from the year that TZR began to now.

2009: Flushed Cheeks

As seen on the runways of John Galliano, Thakoon, Narcisco Rodriguez and backstage at House of Holland's Fall '08 show, overly-pink cheeks were very much a thing.

2009: Pale Lips

Prada showed us how to perfectly pull off a pale pout on their Spring '08 runway. The neutral lip was also seen on models for Oscar de la Renta, Anna Sui, Versace and Fendi, dubbing it the trend of the year.

2010: Embellished Lashes

It all started with a single feather on the lashes of Marchesa's models in their Spring '10 collection and continued with Chanel, Zac Posen, and more of our favorites.

2010: Messy Side Braid

The windblown braids at Alexander Wang's Spring '10 show marked the beginning of a revolution. Marchesa, Nicole Miller and Miu Miu also created their own variations of the braid trend.

Dark, thick and defined brows made a statement at Narciso Rodriguez's Fall '10 show and on the runways of Carolina Herrera, Balmain and Chloe.

2011: Donut Buns

While the sock bun is still around, there wasn't a hair out of place backstage at Donna Karan's Fall '11 show. Yves Saint Laurent and Oscar de la Renta were also on the forefront of this trend.

2012: Colored Hair

Dramatically painted hair at Thakoon's Spring '12 runway show sparked the hair chalk trend. Models for Peter Som, Chanel and Altuzarra were all wearing more wearable verions of the colored hair trend.

2012: Crazy Cateye

While we have all experimented with an exaggerated winged liner, it was memorably showcased on Anna Sui's models for Spring '13 as well as runways of Emporio Armani, Fendi and Lanvin.

2013: Stiletto Nails

While the nail art movement is still going strong, pointed nails made a splash on Cushnie et Ochs' Spring '12 and runways of Jason Wu and Angel Sanchez

2013: Sleek Ponies

It was all about the center-parted, low ponytails backstage at Jason Wu's Spring '14 show and runways of Jil Sander and Carolina Herrera.

2014: "No Makeup" Look

As seen on the models of Proenza Schouler's Spring '14 runway, the minimal makeup look is the new go-to of the moment. Michael Kors and Calvin Klein were among the many to validate the trend for us.

2014: Orange Lips

Prabal Gurung's Spring '14 models were in good company by those of John Galliano, Rag & Bone and Creatures of the Wind with a bright orange lip. Colored lips are making a statement this summer.
