How To Get Perfect Hair Even When It’s Humid Outside

by Stephanie Montes

As we transition between the dry heat of summer and the chilly, sometimes rainy months of fall, it’s easy to feel personally attacked by the frizz-inducing humidity. Instead of hiding under a hat all season, we tapped hairstylist and founder of RI CI—a line of hair products that focuses on curly and frizz-prone locks—Ricky Pennisi for tips on getting smooth strands. Take note of these pro pointers now and rest-assured, you’ll look your best, no matter the forecast.

Tip One: Don't Condition Your Crown Line

"Your scalp and hair are two separate entities and should be treated as such. Regardless of the weather, you should never put conditioner above your crown line (even in an effort to battle frizz). The oils in the conditioner are too heavy for your scalp and can leave hair feeling greasy, which is even worse."

Tip Two: Stay Hydrated

"Hydration is key to taming frizz. Think of your hair as a sponge–it can only hold a certain amount of water in it at a time. Water-based products fill your hair with all the hydration it needs, which prevents it from soaking up environmental moisture like humidity."

Tip Three: Cool Down

"When blow-drying hair, alternate between the hot and cold settings and always finish with a blast of cool air. The cold air locks in the frizz-free shine long past walking out into less-than-perfect weather."

Tip Four: Keep Brushing To A Minimum

"There is such a thing as over-brushing–especially on dry hair. When your hair is wet, it's safe to use a comb to remove tangles but when it's dry, hair is more susceptible to frizz and breakage. Try to limit dry-brushing to twice per week."
