Nylon’s Rachael Wang Shares Her Beauty Rules

Daniel Zuchnik

A post as Nylon’s fashion market director will keep anyone on their toes, but throw fashion stylist and creative consultant into the mix and the average human is sure to start panicking. Rachael Wang does it all while leaving behind a trail of drooling street style photographers.

We tapped the queen of multitasking (and looking stellar while doing it) to spill the contents of her on-set hero kit, the secret to keeping that platinum mane looking magnificent, and the iconic artist she looks to for beauty inspiration.

Rule #1: Think Small

"My beauty M.O. in 3 words: the bare minimum."

Rule #2: Keep Harmful Rays At Bay

"I love Josie Maran Argan Daily moisturizer with SPF 47 for face, Coola sport liplux for lips and Alba Botanic and Erbaviva for body."

Rule #3: Know Your Shade

"Tom Ford Black Orchid is this amazing vampy purple. Though it's very dark, I find it surprisingly easy to wear. Unfortunately, it's been discontinued. MAC Cyber is a close second."

Rule #4: Moisturize. Always.

"One Love Organics Skin Savior is a balm I use anywhere I need moisture: lips, hands or even as a facial cleanser. I also love face oils -- Suki Face pure facial moisturizer is ideal for my dry skin since it soaks right in."

Rule #5: When Possible, Go Natural

"I'm in the midst of transitioning to natural beauty products and I stumbled upon this all purpose stick. I use it on my cheeks for a dewy natural flush and blot on lips for the same effect. It has this surprisingly intoxicating smell that reminds me of Buddhist temples in Nepal. Tarte Lights, Camera, Flashes is a pretty good natural mascara I've been using and I like their Amazonian Clay waterproof concealer in medium a lot, too."

Rule #6: Work With What You Got

"Smashbox Brow Tech in Taupe/Soft Brown beefs up my non-existent eyebrows."

Rule #7: Don't Be A Slave To Trends

"Once I bleached my hair, a red lip became a bit garish on me so that's a trend that no longer works for me. I prefer a neutral lip with a bit of balm these days."

Rule #8: Take Care Of Color-Treated Hair

"My hair color guru is Roxie Darling at Color Story. She is the double process princess. I like roots so I go about 5 weeks between touch ups. In between it's all about conditioning. I love Kerastase Nutritive Masquintense for deep conditioning. I use it a couple times a week and it makes my hair Pantene commercial silky, no joke. My hair is so dry now that it's blonde that I don't need to wash it very often at all. I mostly rinse and condition. I'm an air dry kind of girl so that cuts back on potential heat damage, too."

Rule #9: Don't Be Afraid To Mix Scents

"I love mixing oils that I buy at a local import shop called Dual Specialty. It's usually some combination of sandalwood, musk and almond. It's weird, but I also love Diptyque L'ombre Dan's L'eau -- the eau de toilette not the candle. I met a man once who was wearing it and thought it worked incredibly well as a fragrance."

Rule #10: Splurge On Pro-Performed Color

"My most significant beauty expense is definitely my hair color. Platinum is easy to mess up- if the roots aren't done properly you'll get an orange stripe and I don't want to experience that again."

Rule #11: Save On Wellness Basics

"My absolute favorite bargain beauty product is coconut oil which has infinite uses. I use it as a moisturizer for face and body, a deep conditioner, a bath soak, and for oil pulling (an Ayurvedic practice)."

Rule #12: Skip The Polish

"I've been into longer, almond shaped nails these days, but no nail polish."

Rule #13: Embrace Your Age

"My beauty icon is any woman who makes peace with her body, embraces her wrinkles and ages gracefully. Georgia O'Keeffe had always inspired me."
