Adopt These Habits In Your 40s To Look Younger Longer

by Stephanie Montes

When it comes to skincare, the products that worked in your 20s won’t do you any favors in your 40s. Now that you’ve bloomed into a better, more mature, more polished version of yourself, it’s time to make better decisions—tailor your regimen, correct damage done in your younger, less sensible days and slow down the aging process. Ahead, six habits to adopt in your 40s for skin that’ll stay radiant for years to come.

Exfoliate Carefully And Daily

If your skin is looking lackluster, daily exfoliation is your saving grace. Choose a non-drying cleanser in combination with a gentle cleansing device to help remove dead skin cells. Stay away from alcohol-based cleansers or rough exfoliating beads that strip your skin and leave it feeling parched.

Use A Serum Religiously

Your 20s and most of your 30s are about double-duty products that maximize the little downtime you have in your busy schedule. In your 40s, take a few extra minutes to make sure you're getting all the benefits you deserve. If you haven't already, introduce a serum to your regimen. Sure, it's one extra step, but it's more hydrating than a moisturizer (though you still need that too).

Pack On The Anti-Aging Ingredients

Now's the time to start investing in high-powered anti-aging products. Retinoids and peptides are two ingredients you should add to your routine if you haven't done so already. Peptides help rebuild collagen, especially when used in tandem with texture-improving retinoids.

Keep Your Skin Extra Moisturized

Potent ingredients like retinoids (while great for anti-aging) can be drying to the skin, so make sure to pack on a heavy night cream before bed. Look for one with a high level of glycerin to help skin retain the moisture it needs.

Protect Your Skin

You know this already, but for daytime, we can't stress enough the importance of sunscreen (yes, even in winter). Sun damage is the number one cause of wrinkles, fine lines and sagging skin, not to mention dark spots and other irregularities in pigmentation that tack years onto your face. Apply an SPF 30 or higher on a daily basis.

Think Outside Your Face

Don't forget your face isn't the only place that shows your age. Use anti-aging products specifically formulated for your neck. Look for phytoestrogens to smooth, retinols to plump and licorice root to correct discoloration. Trust us, you'll thank us for this one later.
