The Only 5 Beauty Items You Need For A Weekend Vacation

by Kristi Mikesky

Packing the perfectly consolidated weekender bag is a true art form—a fact we become painfully reminded of as our travel schedules peak and we’re faced with the reality of perpetually overstuffed luggage (as our EIC says, you can never have too many options). While editing our clothing and accessories will always prove a challenge, one area that we’ve become quite adept at scaling back is our beauty regimen. Especially for a getaway heavy on the R&R, a complicated makeup routine is simply unnecessary. Here, we’ve pared it down to the bare essentials so maybe, just maybe, you’ll have room for that extra pair of shoes.

Clear Mascara

Use a clear formula to lift and separate your lashes as well as groom eyebrows. If you usually rely on mascara or brow gel to impart color, consider tinting (we suggest professionally, at a local salon) for a semi-permanent fix before you head out of town.

Tinted Sunscreen

A tinted sunscreen is vacation's answer to foundation—it provides the SPF protection necessary for a day in the sun while offering moderate coverage if you don't want to go totally au naturel. (This Sisley formula is pricey, but trust us when we say a little goes a long way.)

Multipurpose Palette

A blush-and-bronzer palette is crucial for adding a splash of color to your complexion—selecting one with cream-based formulas is ideal, as you can apply with your fingers. Dab a bit of the peachy shade on the apples of your cheeks and lips, and use the tawny hue on eyelids and high points of the face.

Hydrating Moisturizer

If there's one step of your skincare routine you truly shouldn't skip on vacation, it's moisturizer. Select a gentle formula you can use day and night—as a base for your (minimal) makeup and to soothe and replenish sun-drenched skin while you sleep.

Cleansing Towelettes

Pre-moistened wipes are the easiest way to remove makeup, dirt and grime before bed (or anytime you need a pick-me-up). During the day, keep them in your beach bag to refresh and cool on-the-go.
