What happened to Kim Kardashian in Paris might sound like a marketing catchphrase, but in reality, it was the stuff of horror stories: Two thieves, a gun, and a plea to spare the life of a loving wife and mother of two. Kim is understandably still scarred, and she didn’t shy away from sharing her emotions when she appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show for her first television interview recalling the ordeal.
The reality star, who’s been keeping a low profile, admitted that she’s a changed woman, particularly with her new attitude toward materialism. “I know this sounds crazy, but I know that was meant to happen to me,” she said, tearing up. While no one deserves that kind of experience, her reaction has been mature and genuine.
“I was definitely materialistic before—not that there’s anything bad with having things and working hard to get those things,” she added. “But I’m so happy that my kids get this me… Because I just don’t care about that stuff anymore.”
Kim also explained that after meeting with her attorneys, she learned that the robbers, who took about $10 million worth of jewelry, had been following her for two years on social media and through her television appearances. She admitted that she doesn’t know if she’d ever feel comfortable wearing real jewelry again. She even spoke about the way she felt when the robbers entered her room: “Automatically your stomach drops. It’s a feeling you just can’t describe. I said a prayer—I said, ‘I know I’m going to heaven. I hope my kids and my husband are okay.'”
But because this was the Ellen show, there was no getting away without a little humor. When Kim said the masked men had asked the concierge to take them to “the rapper’s wife,” Ellen joked: “How dare them not know your name?” Kim graciously laughed along with the audience. In the end, she said she’s just glad it didn’t turn out worse. “I’m out, I’m home, I’m safe,” she said. “I’m such a better person. Let’s move on.”
