This Is Why Prince George Always Wears Shorts

As one of the most recognizable toddlers in modern-day history, Prince George is regularly outfitted with some of the world’s top children’s designers and the latest trends. His ensembles have carried labels from Rachel Riley to Cath Kidston, and much like mother Kate Middleton, the little prince has already made headlines with his signature style. But whether or not you’ve noticed, George is always wearing shorts—and there’s a reason behind this fashion choice.

“Trousers are for older boys and men, whereas shorts on young boys is one of those silent class markers that we have in England,” etiquette expert William Hanson told Harper’s Bazaar UK. “Although times are (slowly) changing, a pair of trousers on a young boy is considered quite middle class–quite suburban. And no self-respecting aristo or royal would want to be considered suburban. Even the Duchess of Cambridge.”

The royal family has always remained faithful to this tradition, with Princes William and Harry wearing shorts until they were considered old enough for trousers, usually around eight years. That’s certainly one way to stand out when the temperature drops this winter.
