‘90s-Grunge Meets Glam — These Unexpected Spring Florals Are Anything But Garden Variety

Prepare to enter your daisy era.

by Andrea Gale

If you tend to think of spring’s fashion florals as being of the strictly sweet variety, that’s understandable, given fashion history — but the trends for spring 2024 feel decidedly different. Stronger and more neutral, the latest florals are a surprising and sophisticated take on what could be seen as the season’s most ubiquitous print. In keeping with this trend shift, Coach’s latest drop serves up its iconic Tabby 26 and Tabby 20 quilted shoulder bags in fresh florals enlivened by a dose of ‘90s grunge for a thoroughly evolved take on the classics.

The Season’s Edgiest Florals

Coach’s ‘Find Your Courage’ campaign tapped the likes of Lil Nas X, YoungJi, Wu Jinyan, and Kōki — and now, in its latest ‘Courage to Keep Evolving’ chapter, there’s it-girl Camila Mendes. Coach has always demonstrated the power fashion has to change a mood, but its latest designs demonstrate the power of evolution, with bold floral prints that capture the fresh and cheerful energy of the season — but in a more neutral palette that tempts even the most understated among us to lean into florals. Consider it a floral that does a little rule-breaking of its own.

With inspiration drawn from 1940s tea dresses reimagined through a ‘90s-grunge lens, the designs feature a daisy motif that is simultaneously retro and impossibly current; proof that just because the florals of seasons’ past happened to feature candy-sweet shades, it doesn’t make it a seasonal requirement.

Based on archival Coach design from the ‘70s, the Tabby 20 bag features another vintage-inspired detail: a daisy print. The large graphic daisy motif seen here features strong tones and shapes; the black background serving as striking contrast to white flowers with vibrant yellow centers. It’s important to note that the yellow is more golden mustard than buttery pastel, a color choice that toughens the overall energy of the piece without sacrificing any joy. And while it’s a floral, the overall shades of black and ecru read as more neutral, a piece that can easily fold into a more minimal wardrobe, or be styled for evening, particularly given the luxe gold-toned chain strap and logo hardware.

With a bifurcated center compartment and an inside magnetic snap pocket, the Tabby 20 is roomy enough for your phone, wallet, keys, and AirPods. And there’s an outer slip pocket for any last-minute additions. Double up the leather-woven chain for wear as a shoulder bag, or leave it long to wear as a crossbody.

Along with punchy florals, Coach also offers the Tabby 20 in a solid hue that’s every bit as edgy. The glowing, golden canary shade awakens the senses precisely as you’d expect a spring color to do — but adds a surprising bit of attitude. It’s a strong choice, and one that makes it unexpectedly versatile — you could just as easily pair this with the deeper shades of fall and winter, and it would make an elegant choice for evening as well — especially given its compact size.

Floral, But Make It Grunge

Sure, everyone knows the classic saying “fresh as a daisy;” bringing new meaning to the phrase is the daisy print Coach used for the Tabby 26 — a roomier version of the Tabby 20 — which really does feel new. Against an eye-catching black background of graphically quilted genuine nappa leather, small clusters of white daisies pop; ever-so-slightly uneven, the imperfection of the petals speaks to the overall grunge inspiration of the piece. The Tabby 26 is a perfect choice for daytime, or for transitioning a look from day to night. It has room to stash the obvious phone, keys, and wallet, plus extras; this version features two center compartments divided by a convenient zipper pocket, in addition to an inner magnetic snap pocket and an outer slip pocket.

With the same luxe nappa leather and gold-toned hardware as the Tabby 26 above, this version rendered in solid black is equally worthy of consideration, especially if you’re looking to offset busier prints in your lineup. The chic quilted texture and signature C logo promise to make this a perennial go-to. And since the crossbody strap can double up to be worn as a shoulder bag — and even convert to a prim top-handle — it’s ready for any event that pops up on your calendar.
