The Making Of Rachel Zoe’s CFDA Dress

Our Editor-In-Chief attended today’s CFDA Award ceremony in New York City, walking the red carpet in one of her own creations. The custom design is the result of careful collaboration and weeks of preparation. We documented the process to share the story behind her red carpet look.

Go Behind The Scenes

2 Weeks Prior

Things start at the drawing board, literally. A variety of ideas were tossed around, all of which included a long, column-like silhouette as shown in these sketches. Previous collection lookbooks were also tapped for inspiration; the one-shoulder concept came from a look in Rachel's Fall 2014 collection.

10 Days Prior

While the pattern was being rendered in muslin, Rachel and her team narrowed down fabric options, opting for a dark gold brocade used in the Fall 2014 collection. The team also chose to incorporate the same strong shoulder silhouette and a sweeping ruffle for extra drama.

5 Days Prior

The first of three fittings the team made adjustments to the hemline, and in the interest of comfort, a back vent, pockets and an adjustable zipper at the cuff of the long sleeve were also added to the design.

Hours Prior

To balance the dramatic fabric, Rachel opted for a fresh evening look with a nude lip, smoky eye and side-swept hair.

Out The Door!

Rachel accessorized with David Webb jewelry, a Calvin Klein clutch, Casadei shoes, and of course her well-dressed husband!
