The Classy Girl’s Guide To Sexy Halloween Costumes

We’re all for embracing the body and showing a little skin when the occasion calls for it, but we have to confess our frustration with the notion of female costumes come October. The ubiquitous offering of (ahem) skimpy ensembles that involve animal ears, low-cut tops and barely there bottoms limits us. We don’t mean to chastise those who plan to be sexy kittens this year, but we suggest switching it up by opting for a getup that assumes a more memorable, powerful presence. Dressing as exemplary women of our time can make you feel much more confident (and equally alluring) without showing off all your assets. From the most recognized American feminist symbol to arguably our generation’s best performer and all-around showstopper, here are eight outstanding ladies to channel this Halloween.

Empowering Halloween Costumes

Beyoncé dressed as Frida Kahlo in New York City in 2014.

Amelia Earhart

She's the badass who was the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. Embody her aviator style with a flight jacket, leather leggings and heeled lace-up booties. Throw on some retro goggles and a white scarf to complete the look.

Beyoncé

2016 was her year with the release of her highly acclaimed and fan-obsessed feminist visual album Lemonade. Emulate the now iconic Louisville Slugger moment from the song "Hold Up" with a billowy floor-grazing yellow frock, platform sandals and of course a baseball bat. Boys, don't mess.

Frida Kahlo

Get inspired by the internationally celebrated Mexican painter with a floral-printed maxi, vibrant beaded jewelry and a beautiful multicolored flower crown.

Hillary Clinton

Whatever your political preference may be, you can't deny Hillary has shattered the glass ceiling as the first female presidential nominee. Celebrate this historic moment with a red pantsuit, pointed-toe pumps, pearl earrings and an "I'm With Her" button.

Rosie the Riveter

Possibly the most recognizable cultural symbol for feminism circa WWII, Rosie the Riveter champions working women and their economic power to this day. Break out into her "We Can Do It" pose in a denim boilersuit, combat boots and red bandanna.

Cleopatra

She was not only one of the most beautiful women in history, but also one of the most influential females to reign. Channel the Egyptian queen with a flowy cape mini, stone-encrusted collar necklace and lace-up gladiator shoes. Don't forget the blue eye shadow, bold cat eye and blunt-bang wig.

Patti Smith

The punk rock legend made huge waves in the '70s with her fusion of music and poetry. Emulate her famous Horses album cover with black skinny pants and a white button-down. Throw a blazer over your shoulders and sling a skinny scarf around your neck.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg

We don't think there's anything sexier than an incredibly cerebral woman, and Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is goals. As the second-ever female on the court, her recognizable getup of black robe, lace jabot and glasses has become a popular feminist costume of choice. Try it out with a black lace-collared dress, stacked-heel pumps, wire specs and a mallet for good measure.
