From can’t-miss street style at New York Fashion Week to the trending looks gracing our Instagram Explore pages, we can officially confirm that fall fashion is here — and we couldn’t be happier. After months working from home and wearing pants without zippers, we’re returning to the office, enjoying happy hour with coworkers, and exploring new hobbies that don’t include sourdough or banana bread.

And our closets deserve comeback seasons of their own. TZR Senior Fashion News Editor Marina Liao partnered with Macy’s to share how she’s incorporating fall’s best color and texture trends into her own sartorial refresh. (Hint: Fall’s big three? Grayscale, color-blocking, and transitional dressing for all those unpredictable temps to come.) From new takes on corduroy and leather to embracing art deco-inspired jewelry, check out Liao’s interview below and the must-have pieces that are making her excited to get dressed again.

How would you describe your signature fall style?

My fall style is comfortable, with a trend sprinkled in here or there. Since I am going back into the office, I want to look polished and invest in pieces I can sit down in for 8 hours straight.

What do you love most about fall’s three biggest trends?

I love challenging myself to add more color into my wardrobe because I tend to wear beige, white, and black for the colder months. This season, I would love to use that neutral palette as a base, but add in a bold red or purple hue to mix it up.

How does honing your personal style boost your confidence?

The most important thing to me is wearing what I like versus blindly following the trends — that is how you craft a signature, personal style. You don’t always need to wear the newest or coolest thing if it doesn’t speak to you.

What’s your advice for experimenting with the season’s biggest trends — without losing a unique style POV?

If a trend doesn’t feel good, skip it. Just because something is trendy doesn’t mean it’ll work for you. For example, I have yellow undertones and know certain shades of yellow and neon do not work for me.

What is a fall trend you’re excited about?

An easy but statement-making knit!

What matters most to you when it comes to putting together a winning fall look?

Jewelry! I always go for a versatile but trendy everyday necklace.
