With all the heat and humidity, summer is the perfect time to chop off your long locks into a chic lob or a pixie cut. But it’s autumn now, and that on-trend summer cut has probably hit a peak in-between stage: It’s not exactly as long as you’d like it to be, but going short again right before the winter seems like a bad move. You could always try talking to it nicely and taking some supplements. Or, as nutritionist Maria Marlowe told Vogue, you could embrace a plant-based diet.
“The healthiest diet for your hair is the healthiest diet in general—one that is based on real, whole foods and [is] mostly plant-based,” she said. For optimal Rapunzel-like hair growth and shine, she recommends foods like beans, bell peppers and leafy greens (plus a couple of non-plant options: wild salmon and eggs), which are full of nutrients like iron, zinc and omega-3s.
Not only is a plant-based diet great for your “long hair, don’t care” goals, but it’s also been linked to decreasing your chances of developing diabetes, heart disease and even cancer. Gluten-free spinach muffins for dinner, anyone?
