The New Antiaging Superfood You Should Be Eating Every Day

Kale has long been hailed as the green superfood, the one by which all others are measured. Well, there’s a new game in town, and word in the grocery aisle is it’s even better than that ubiquitous leaf. We’re talking about moringa oleifera, a plant that’s chock-full of good-for-you nutrients.

Its superpowers are mostly found in its leaves and seeds, which contain tons of vitamin C (we’re talking four times the amount as in oranges, people), vitamin A, calcium, potassium and amino acids. It’s packed with antioxidants, which help fight free radicals and reduce inflammation, slowing signs of aging. One study found the plant also helps counteract signs of aging by helping naturally balance your body’s hormones.

As if that weren’t enough, studies have found that compounds in moringa called isothiocyanates can help control blood sugar levels and ward off diabetes. Oh, sorry, if you thought moringa was finished being a baller, you’d be wrong: It’s also high in protein!

Here in the US, you’re likely to find it in supplements or ground into a powder that’s easy to add to smoothies or brew as a tea. Moringa powder smells slightly nutty, has a bit of an earthy taste (but not overwhelmingly so) and is a pretty green color similar to spirulina or matcha. But, proving that you can have too much of a good thing, moringa may have a laxative effect in large doses. Luckily, you don’t need much to reap the benefits—around 10 grams a day will do. Easy, convenient and not overly healthy-tasting—just the way we like our superfoods.
