Finally, The Spring Skirt You've Been Waiting Six Months To Wear

@nataliacastellarcalvani

For those of you brave souls who willingly reside in inclement climates, it's probably been months since your legs have seen the light of day. Thankfully, schlepping around in heat tech and puffers will soon be a thing of the past as the arrival of spring dresses and skirts will free up the opportunity to bare your neglected gams. If you're looking for that something to help press the reset button for spring, it's time to consider a '70s staple (and trend du jour), the button-front skirt. The last few seasons, the skirt silhouette of choice has been that of the slip, in large part thanks to brands with cult followings like Rouje and Réalisation. These direct to consumer lines created floral-print iterations of the slinky skirt style that went viral on Instagram and subsequently sold out. And while slip skirts aren't going anywhere just yet, their button-studded sister is gaining momentum.

Look back through your family photos and you might find that A-line minis were perhaps the more memorable skirt silhouette during the '70s, but the midi's Lady of the Canyon vibe — inspired by icons like Joni Mitchell, Stevie Nicks, and Michelle Phillips — feels a bit more of-the-moment. Right now designers are releasing their version of the timeless piece in a colorful and textured range of styles. Lauded houses like Balenciaga and Gucci along with up-and-comers including Ganni and Rejina Pyo are all getting in on the button-front action and so should you. Ahead, the best skirts to appease your legs this spring.

Rejina Pyo paired a punchy skirt with a retro fruit-print top on the runway for Spring/Summer 2019. If you want to break out the bold skirt IRL, consider styling it with a cream sweater or muted blazer to temper the look.

If you're ready to full-on embrace the retro aesthetic, consider styling your skirt as part of a matching set. Finish with a wide-brim hat and you're good to go.
