Long ago, the collective haircare conscious crowned the Mason Pearson brush king amongst the plethora of options available for taming our manes. And it’s no wonder why: Dating back to 1885, the handmade tool’s claim to fame includes a patented rubber-cushion pad, cruelty-free boar bristles and a polished plastic handle, which promise to deliver your softest, shiniest tresses yet. Intrigued? We’ve tested the luxury brush out and can confirm it lives up to its hype. However, something this good naturally comes with a hefty price tag. Marked between $105-$325, pending the size, the Mason Pearson will put you back a pretty penny (Or around 20+ fancy lattes).
All things considered, the backstage beauty staple obviously isn’t for everyone. But, before you find yourself in a frizz-induced frenzy, take comfort in knowing that there are a bevy of like-minded brushes on the market — and we’ve done the dirty work of seeking them out for you. Shoppable below, our selects are similar in design to our hero brush and achieve comparable results (Scout’s honor), but come at a fraction of the price. Sure, these stand-ins may not turn your locks into gold or last you forever. But then again, it’s not out of the realm of possibility that they could. (This thick-haired editor stands by the Sonia Kashuk model, which she has used since 2008!).
Should you have the means to opt for the Mason Pearson, you certainly have our blessing to spoil your strands—but if not, you can proudly take the Parallel Universe route and save your dollars for a trip to the salon. After all, a fresh cut, color and blow-dry go miles more than running a brush through your hair. Thoughts?
