Treating acne can be frustrating for everyone, but for darker skin tones, that process can be even more challenging, as many beauty brands neglect to take into consideration that those post-inflammatory dark spots (aka hyperpigmentation) tend to require a different approach on dark skin. That’s because darker skin tones naturally have more melanin, which is what causes skin pigmentation in the first place, and is therefore more likely to produce too much melanin when triggered by something like a pimple.

This is where Makari De Suisse comes in. The French-founded skin care brand formulated each of its products with deeper skin tones in mind, and focuses on promoting a more even complexion regardless of your other concerns. For those looking to clear up and prevent breakouts while fading unwanted dark spots at the same time, Makari De Suisse curated a four-piece kit that has your entire skin care routine covered.

Fast Facts:

  • Key benefits: treats breakouts, fades dark spots
  • Key ingredients: sulfur, vitamin C, salicylic acid, glycolic acid, mulberry root extract
  • Hydroquinone-free
  • Cruelty-free

What’s In The Kit?

When it comes to treating acne, this soap uses sulfur, a slightly smelly ingredient that targets breakouts in four different ways: by killing acne-causing bacteria, calming redness, regulating oil production, and exfoliating dead skin cells. It’s sulfur’s antimicrobial properties that inhibit the growth of bacteria that contribute to acne, while its anti-inflammatory properties combat redness (not just for acne but for other skin conditions, like rosacea, as well). Additionally, the naturally occurring ingredient works to prevent excess oil production that can clog your pores as it smooths away dead skin cells that can get trapped in pores, too. Makari De Suisse’s Clear Acnyl Sulfur Soap gives you the active ingredient in the form of a bar soap that can be lathered up and used on the face and body. You can use this in the morning or at night (three times per week, max), allowing it to sit on your skin for about a minute before rinsing it off. And if you’re worried about the scent, Makari De Suisse disguises sulfur’s notorious rotten egg smell with fragrance.

Next up is the brand’s Glycolic Glow toner, which can be used post-cleansing in the morning and at night (though you may want to skip using it after your sulfur soap to avoid drying out your skin). Lightweight and meant to be left on your skin, the toner uses multi-tasking glycolic acid to help with keeping pores clear and fading unwanted hyperpigmentation, as well as stimulating collagen production and improving the overall clarity and texture of your complexion. The chemical exfoliant doesn’t work alone, however, as you’ll also find ginseng root extract in the toner, which works to brighten unwanted dark spots, as well as multiple soothing and hydrating ingredients like rice water, rose flower water, aloe water, and glutamic acid. Plus, it uses a spray-on applicator, so you can mist it over your face without needing a cotton pad.

For a more targeted product, there’s the Skin Repairing & Clarifying Serum, which was designed to be used both morning and night. The serum is infused with vitamin C to both prevent future hyperpigmentation and brighten existing dark spots. There are also plant-based extracts like mulberry root that help with brightening the skin, as well as grapeseed extract and algae extract to nourish the skin.

And as the final skin-clearing and brightening step, apply the Makari De Suisse Day Radiance Face Cream. As its name suggests, the moisturizer was formulated for daytime use, using a blend of salicylic acid to clear pores and antioxidant-rich plant extracts to brighten, soothe, and moisturize. Chief among them, you’ll find mulberry root extract, carrot extract, and licorice root extract (the latter considered to be a gentle ingredient for inhibiting melanin production).
