Throw Back Beauty: ’70s Beach Braids

by Nicky Deam

Here’s a little hair inspiration for the weekend, by way of the carefree ’70s. Great for keeping your loose strands off your face without committing to an up-do, its also so simple you don’t even need a mirror. Pair with a bikini or a bohemian dress and layered necklaces for an easygoing vibe.

Step by Step

Step 1

Start with a middle part in air-dried or day-old hair that has more texture to hold the style in place. Spritz with a little dry shampoo or salt spray if necessary.

Step 2

On one side, skim a 2-inch wide section of hair from the top of your part starting at your hairline, leaving the rest of the hair underneath free to frame your face. Taking a large section from the hairline will make you look like a 5-year-old.

Step 3

Make the braid relatively tight so you don't have to use a hair tie (which would defeat the relaxed vibe). Use a little hairspray to hold the braid together at the bottom.

Step 4

Repeat on the other side, making sure to use a similar amount of hair so that it looks balanced.

Step 5

Blend the end of the braids into your hair and finish with a spritz of salt spray.
