The bun updos at 2023’s Critics Choice Awards prove once again that the classic hairstyle was made to rule red carpets. Whether pulled high for a prima ballerina feel or kept low and voluminous for Old Hollywood glamour, these buns have nothing in common — and that’s why the style is so cool.

Quinta Brunson’s sculptural bun updo is towering, wrapped, and super sleek to complement the fanfare of her ruffled gown. Her hair, styled by Alexander Armand using Maui Moisture products and Olivia Garden tools, is the be-all-end-all of topknots.Steve Granitz/FilmMagic/Getty Images
Lily James kept her bun low and fluffy, accented by a relatively new pair of retro-looking bangs. Celebrity stylist Halley Brisker, who created the bun using Nexxus products, tells TZR that James’ look is partially inspired by Audrey Hepburn. Steve Granitz/FilmMagic/Getty Images
While glimpses of Michelle Yeoh’s bun proved hard to catch on the actual red carpet (turn back to Slide 2 for a detailed shot), the chic simplicity of the front of her hair belies the looping intricacy of the back. Claire Foy’s low, tucked-in bun is gathered at the nape of her neck for a demure effect that manages to make the highly glamorous hairstyle look effortless. The work of celebrity hairstylist Ben Skervin, it’s fit for royalty in any era.Steve Granitz/FilmMagic/Getty Images
Anya Taylor-Joy and her hairstylist, Gregory Russell, clearly subscribe to that “the higher the hair, the closer to heaven” philosophy when constructing her big, fluffy ballerina bun. Featuring loops of tucked hair almost create a braided feel, it’s one of her all-time best styles.Jeff Kravitz/FilmMagic, Inc/Getty Images
Why have just one bun when you can have two? Amber Ruffin’s braided space buns are a cheerful, trendy match to her sequin-covered blazer while the bead-accented Fulani braids shimmer just beneath the buns. Kevin Winter/Getty Images Entertainment/Getty Images
Anna Sawai’s low, twisted bun is stunning on its own, but celebrity hairstylist Jenny Cho took it to the next level with a gleaming gold hair clip and an arrangement of spiky ends that look like accessories in their own right.Monica Schipper/WireImage/Getty Images
It’s all in the details with Danielle Deadwyler’s show-stopping bun, complete with a sleek center part and tons of glossy twists tucked to create an explosion of shine, texture, and shape.
