It’s no secret that women are often shamed for breastfeeding in public. From Jaime King to Gisele, celebrities have often been at the center of the nursing-versus-formula debate, with supermodel Candice Swanepoel becoming the latest target of online mommy shamers. The Victoria’s Secret Angel, who gave birth to son Anacã a little more than two months ago, has posed topless or nude for numerous editorials and campaigns yet only now feels “the need to cover up” and is “somewhat shy” of exposing her breasts to feed her baby.
In a post on Instagram that showed her breastfeeding her son, Candice expressed her thoughts on this double standard. “The world has been desensitized to the sexualization of the breast and to violence on TV…why should it be different when it comes to breastfeeding?” she wrote. “Breastfeeding is not sexual, it’s natural. Those who feel it is wrong to feed your child in public need to get educated on the benefits breastfeeding has on mother and child and intern [sic] on society as a whole.”
You go, girl. This stigma has to stop.
