Apparently This Herb Can Reduce Anxiety and Boost Libido, So Naturally We Had To Know More
In the world of wellness, one day you’re in, and the next day you’re out. We’re mostly joking, but it does seem like there’s always some new (and more exciting than the last!) ingredient debuting in the natural health world. While we could spend time psychologically unpacking why we’re always searching for the next best thing to improve our health, that’s honestly a lot for a Tuesday, and we’re far too intrigued by shatavari, an herb that’s long been a favorite tonic for women in Ayurvedic medicine.
Shatavari is an adaptogen that promises to help reduce stress, boost your sex drive and regulate your hormones. (If you’re not familiar with adaptogens, here’s a quick primer: They help your body cope with stress by healing your adrenal system.)
How it works: Two compounds in the plant help balance estrogen and progesterone in your body, which reportedly translates into a stellar PMS cure, fertility support and even added energy. Aviva Romm, MD, tells Well + Good that studies have shown that the plant could help with depression, stress, exhaustion, balancing blood sugar and reducing inflammation.
While we’re definitely off to Whole Foods to pick up this herb in supplement form, we’re also taking all this info with a grain of pink Himalayan salt. And as always, check with your doc before you make any changes to the medicines or supplements that you take.
