Sex And The City‘s Opening Credits Almost Looked Very Different

Despite the countless fashionable outfits donned by our favorite fictional New Yorker Carrie Bradshaw on Sex and the City, none is perhaps more memorable than the iconic tulle tutu that gets splashed as she walks down Fifth Avenue in the opening credits of the show. So imagine our surprise when we came across an alternate version of the sequence—with Carrie dressed in an entirely different ensemble. (Gasp.)

“There were two wardrobes,” series creator Darren Starr tells Entertainment Weekly. “One was the tutu, and we did one pass where Sarah Jessica was wearing a blue dress and didn’t get splashed; instead, she trips when she sees the ad.”

Yes—not only was there a wardrobe change, but Carrie would’ve only stumbled over her own feet—avoiding the curb splash that is now almost symbolic of NYC rush hour. Below, watch the opening that could’ve been (released by HBO in honor of the show’s upcoming 20th anniversary) and be grateful that the world you live in features Carrie and her fabulous white tutu.
