Call it the Big Little Lies effect, but lately our home decor has been feeling a tad blah. Since we won’t be moving to a mansion in Monterey anytime soon, we enlisted the help of potter, designer and author Jonathan Adler to find out how to make our current decor situation feel more luxurious. He knows a thing or a million about the topic—after all, the design philosophy of his eponymous line is “build a timelessly chic foundation, then accessorize with abandon.” These are the five pieces he says will instantly upgrade your home.
Must-Have Pieces For An Elevated Space
An (Almost) OTT Chandelier
"A chandelier that is bigger than you think you need and more expensive than you think you can afford," says Adler. "Any time I've skimped on lighting, I've lived to regret it. Put it—and all your lighting—on a dimmer and you'll look even more glamorous than you already are."
A Swanky Bar Cart
"Bar carts are the swankiest of all home decor," according to Adler. (We're inclined to agree.) "A bar cart says you're louche and you know how to entertain (even if, like me, your drink of choice is a Shirley Temple)."
Chic Wallpaper
"Most people are afraid of wallpaper. You shouldn't be," says Adler. "Wallpaper your walls, or if you're super varsity, wallpaper your ceiling. You won't look back, but you might look up."
Glam-Yet-Functional Tiny Tables
"Wherever you're sitting in your home, you should be able to reach out your arm and set down a drink. A tiny table is a decorator's best friend," says Adler.
A Stylish Tray
"I'm partial to our Jacques tray—it's the perfect finishing touch. The mirror and acrylic feel light and refreshing, like lemon sorbet for the home," Adler says. "We all know your table becomes a catchall for remotes, coasters and candles—might as well corral it all in style." Amen.
