Gigi Hadid has had one incredible year. She co-hosted the American Music Awards, walked the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show and was named the International Model of the Year by the British Fashion Council. But it turns out that she’s accomplished all this while silently struggling with a medical condition for years.
In a panel for Reebok’s #NeverPerfect campaign, the supermodel revealed that she’s been battling thyroid disease for the past couple years. “My metabolism actually changed like crazy this year,” she said. “I have Hashimoto’s disease.” Gigi also explained that this medical condition—which happens when the immune system attacks the thyroid—was the reason for her dramatic weight loss. “It’s now been two years since taking the medication for it, so for the VS show, I didn’t want to lose any more weight,” she said. “I just want to have muscles in the right place, and if my butt can get a little perkier then that’s good.”
Despite dealing with the disorder, Gigi admitted that she’s never skipped work. “You know, I’ve never taken a sick day,” she said. “I just realized! I feel that pressure of not taking time for yourself because you don’t want it to affect your professionalism.” Instead, her method to destress is actually quite simple: “Literally screaming into a pillow helps.” We totally agree.
