If you're itching to swap out your dresses for the crisp feel of denim, the time has finally arrived. Fall 2019’s newest denim trends have finally hit stores and are ready to offer a sartorial refresh. While fashion insiders continue to favor high-waisted boyfriend styles, there's plenty of space to explore your own denim desires.

Besides the classic silhouettes — yes, skinny jeans included — you’ll find lots of retro-inspired '70s and '80s looks. Exaggerated cuffs, baggier silhouettes, and darker denim are popping up for fall, and perennial favorite brands like 3x1, Paige, and Totême exemplify both the novel and subtle denim trends dominating. “Wide legs and flares are making a big comeback,” says Paige Adams-Geller, founder and creative director of Paige denim. “Our Sutton Jean is just that and has a self-tie belt, which makes it an effortless piece.”

Aside from different cuts, Adams-Geller notes the role washes play in denim this fall. Though vintage light-washes remain popular, darker hues are coming back as a sleek contrast. “The fun part is to explore the wash options as they are trending in shades from light indigo to black,” she adds. Scroll on for the denim trend report you need to conquer the fall season and the best pieces to add to your shopping list, now.

Wide Flare

If you thought wide-leg flared denim was a trend of the past, think again. The classic ‘70s-era style has returned and is ideal contrasted with a fitted fall blazer or with a minimalist top, allowing room to play with accessories. “My favorite way to style wide-leg is with a silk cami and leather jacket, Adams-Geller explains. “They also pair nicely with a silk blouse and cool kitten heel.”

Sleek Straight-Leg

While skinny, fitted silhouettes remain a favorite for classic dressers, straight-leg denim is an increasingly popular alternative. High-waisted versions that sit just above your hip bone were seen in the latest collections of luxe designers like Khaite and Totême. A longer hemline looks sleek when styled with pointy-toe mules, while a cropped look is ideal for a daytime ensemble with sneakers.

Darker Denim

After a warm-weather season of lighter, breezy jeans (think pale washes and white denim), deep indigo hues are back again for fall. Seen on the Fall/Winter 2019 runways of Chloé and Dior, a galaxy blue wash adds a polish that pairs well with romantic blouses and luxe ankle boots. This darker blue works with bright colors so don't be afraid to mix and match bold hues into your look. Or, instead try a monochrome dark denim ensemble, featuring a dark jean jacket.

Baggy Trouser Silhouettes

For the denim iteration of relaxed suiting, try an oversized trouser jean. Equal parts comfortable and polished, this look is a refreshing departure from the rigid, skinny silhouettes and can be credited to the shift to utilitarian, minimalistic dressing. Go for an all-over-relaxed look by pairing this denim with a slouchy sweater. For a more polished take on the trend, opt for a ruffle blouse and killer pair of heels.

All Out '80s

Acid wash, mom silhouettes, and funky details like feathers and prints have all been championed by the industry over the last few seasons. As '80s influences have made their way into the collections of brands like Louis Vuitton and Prada, the same sensibilities have arrived in denim.
