Anne Hathaway Is The Latest Celeb To Try One Of 2020's Biggest Red Carpet Trends
Red carpets will always be the place for Hollywood’s top stars to don looks that are so unique, you won’t find them anywhere else. However, they’re also the best way to spot new trends that will inevitably become the most-coveted styles of 2020. And if you’ve been keeping a watchful eye on this year’s circuit of red carpets thus far, you’ve probably noticed one trend that just won’t quit: puff sleeves. With a growing list of top-notch celebrities sporting looks with the ‘80s-inspired detail, the trend has seen iterations in a myriad of styles — and Anne Hathaway’s gold dress takes on modern glamour with a touch of elegance.
Though puff sleeves made a triumphant return to the center of every fashion lover’s focus back in 2019, it’s safe to say that the romantic trend is here to stay for a while. Whether they come in the form of voluminous, frothy dresses or a more structured denim shirt, the space-invading sleeve silhouette adds major drama to any ensemble while still feeling polished — making them suitable for any sort of occasion. And now, they’ve officially come for the red carpet.
Chances are you’ve already seen Beyoncé’s custom Schiaparelli Golden Globes gown from this year, which featured a black fitted bodice with gold, larger-than-life puff sleeves. And while the singer’s outfit certainly kicked off the 2020 awards season in style, it was Hathaway’s sparkling gown that not only proved that puff sleeves will be everywhere on the red carpet, but that it can be done in a classic Old Hollywood way, too.
The 37-year-old star of The Hustle stepped out for the 25th Critic’s Choice Awards at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica on Jan. 12. The actor — who was nominated for her work in Amazon’s limited series, Modern Love — wore a glitzy, gold sequin gown featuring a deep V-neck, dramatic puff sleeves, and a fitted skirt. Hathaway kept the rest of her look simple by wearing white diamond jewelry by Messika, a gold Judith Lieber clutch, and gold strappy sandals by Alexandre Birman.
Whether she’s spending a casual day off in a simple T-shirt and jeans outfit or she’s on the red carpet serving major looks, The Princess Diaries icon has become known for her timeless, elevated style that also comes with an edge of cool. And as one who’s always willing to take a style risk, Hathaway stays privy to the latest sartorial movements in the industry. And with her puff sleeved-gown, the actor is right on-trend.
