Before you head out with your friends this weekend, try skipping your favorite little black dress in favor of something a little more daring. Not sure where to start? Try copying Camila Mendes' silver mini skirt that she wore to Comic-Con 2019 this year. While at first glance it may seem a bit over-the-top, a metallic piece is actually super easy to wear more than once, all thanks to a few simple tricks.

Mendes attended the famed annual comic book convention on July 20 in San Diego, California alongside the rest of her Riverdale co-stars. While the rest of the cast opted for summer-centric pieces like mid-length floral sundresses, Mendes went for a leather mini skirt in a statement-making silver hue. She wore her Sandro skirt with a teal blue graphic t-shirt in order to make it more daytime appropriate and laid-back. She topped off her outfit with a pair of neon orange stiletto sandals designed by Stuart Weitzman. The actor channeled some serious Veronica Lodge vibes when it came to her beauty look. In classic Riverdale fashion, her hair was styled in loose, bouncy curls. Glowing, highlighted skin completed the ensemble.

Now, when it comes to going-out outfits, reaching for the same few pieces time and time again can put you in a serious fashion rut. And, although wearing a head-to-toe black look might feel more safe, Mendes proves that taking a sartorial risk can seriously pay off. So, if you're going to add one thing to your closet this season, make it a metallic mini.

The shiny finish is a year-round favorite because it (surprisingly) pairs well with everything that's already in your closet. Tone a silver skirt down with a basic black or white t-shirt. Or, try wearing your skirt with an oversized button down so that only a sliver of silver or gold shows through at the bottom. Should it get a little chilly, don't be afraid to wear the leather version of a Canadian tuxedo and pair the skirt with your favorite old biker jacket. For a more formal occasion, try styling your mini with a black blazer. (Go for skirt that has a slightly longer hemline and a pair of barely-there black sandals.) Not only will you appear super laid back, but the contrast in textures gives your outfit a cool, thrown-together feel.

As with most things that are made out of genuine leather, mini skirts like Mendes' are going to be more of an investment item. Luckily, faux leather alternatives are also available on sites like Revolve for more than half the price. If you really want to make a statement this season, pick up a skirt made entirely out of silver sequins: Zara makes one that feels seriously luxe — but retails for well under $100.
