There are a handful of tried-and-true outfit formulas that everyone tends to fall back on. A sleek LBD, for example, is a no-fail option for a celebratory night on the town, a fancy gathering that calls for cocktail-attire, or a New Year’s Eve party. Erring on the side of casual, then, is the classic combo of a white T-shirt and jeans. These aforementioned wardrobe basics withstand time and trends, are incredibly easy to wear, and act as great base pieces with which to build the rest of your ensemble, with Emilia Clarke’s trench coat acting as one key piece in elevating the simple two-piece outfit.

Clarke was seen leaving the Whitby Hotel on Oct. 28, after attending a press junket. The actor was all smiles as she was greeted by fans and onlookers, wearing what’s perhaps the simplest outfit formula in the game: a relaxed-fitting white tee and slightly-oversized medium wash jeans.

The Game of Thrones actor always manages to look chic and refined, even when she’s sporting a more casual pairing. Her style secret? Throwing at least one sophisticated staple into the mix. And this time, said elegance came in the form of a floor-length wool trench coat by Gabriela Hearst.

The quintessential fall and spring topper is rendered in a versatile oatmeal color and features a double-breasted silhouette, small lapels, and an optional waist belt. While every detail of Clarke’s topper deserves mention, it’s the maxi length that takes the outerwear staple to a new level of chic and as such, really needs to be called out.

Clarke topped off the look with brown ankle boots and a large tote bag, rendered in a similar oatmeal shade. She pulled her hair back into a ponytail — a low-key beauty move that complemented her simple outfit — and reached for a bright-red lipstick to add a subtle pop of color to the otherwise neutral ensemble.

It's no secret that accessories have the power to take any look from zero to 100 in seconds, but a coat's styling power, especially if it's as chic and elegant as Clarke's, is just a strong.
