Julia Roberts' Stunning Engagement Ring Is Right In Line With The Year's Biggest Jewelry Trend
Julia Roberts wore some pretty memorable jewels — or, rather, her on-screen character, Vivian Ward, did — in Pretty Woman. It's quite hard to forget about that ruby-and-diamond necklace Ward receives from Edward Lewis (portrayed by Richard Gere) before the two head off to a fancy soirée. And while it might seem like nothing will ever compare to the dazzling pieces from the '90s classic, Roberts' engagement ring from husband Daniel Moder certainly does. Although it's fairly simple, the actor's sparkler does stand out for one particular reason.
"Julia’s engagement ring appears to feature a 1.5 to 2 carat oval-shaped green tourmaline in a diamond-accented platinum or white gold band," Kathryn Money, vice president of strategy and merchandising at Brilliant Earth, shares with The Zoe Report over email.
It's no secret that colored gemstones have been a clear favorite among brides in 2018 and 2019, which means Roberts' ring — which she's had perched on her finger since 2002 — is right in line with one of today's most popular jewelry crazes. Though on trend, one facet sets hers apart from the masses.
"Julia’s vibrant green center gemstone makes her ring stand out from the rest," Money says of the actor's bauble. Katy Perry and Princess Eugenie opted for pink center stones and Kate Middleton chose sapphire, but few notable names have sported a verdant jewel on their ring finger, making Roberts' exceptionally unique.
Another attribute that makes the actor's bauble all the more impressive? Its price tag, which actually isn't all that outrageous. Money estimates Roberts' ring to cost between $2,000 and $4,000, "depending on the quality and specific characteristics of the center gemstone and accent diamonds."
Roberts and Moder met back in 2000, while on the set of The Mexican. Though the exact proposal date is unclear, Moder likely got down on one knee sometime in 2002 (the year her engagement ring made its official debut).
The two tied the knot in a low-key wedding on July 4, 2002, which was held at the couples' ranch in New Mexico. The ceremony was so low-profile, in fact, that those invited didn't even know they were attending the nuptials — until they arrived, that is. According to People, attendees thought they were going to a simple Fourth of July party.
Roberts' simple, sophisticated engagement ring is perfect for the classic bride-to-be who still wants something unique. Ahead, The Zoe Report rounded up all the best styles that pay homage to the actor's green sparkler.
