Although her red gown stole the show at Thurs.'s New York City Ballet Fashion Gala, Sarah Jessica Parker's sleek ponytail was the unsung hero of the evening. The actor paired her scarlet-red dress and shoes with a velvet-wrapped ponytail perched on her right shoulder, singlehandedly deeming the side pony cool again.

SJP channeled her inner Carrie Bradshaw with a striking puffy-sleeved gown with a plunging neckline, a mesh back, and ruffles at the wrist when she arrived at the David H. Koch Theatre at Lincoln Center. In typical Parker fashion, she even tucked up the front of her gown to show off her ruby-red pumps.

Even though it was hard to look away from her elaborate dress, the actor's side pony was the low-key star of the look. Parker wore her long blonde hair straight and pulled back into a volume-filled ponytail. She parted it slightly to the side and pinned it back with a chic velvet tie, leaving a few wispy pieces of hair in front of her face.

SJP is synonymous with lush, full curls, and it isn't often that she wears her hair straight and pulled back. Needless to say, her gala look was a welcomed surprise.

The Sex in the City actor is known for her ability to pull off effortless hairstyles. No matter the occasion, Parker has a way of combining undone texture with a touch of sophistication. Her gala look was certainly no exception: The chic, low ponytail was mostly smooth and taught, but it featured subtle volume at the base for a not-too-polished finish.

The wonderful thing about Parker's ponytail is that it's incredibly easy to recreate. Whether you're throwing it together for an evening look or a day at the office, perfecting the art of the side ponytail is well within your reach.

The key to recreating Parker's ponytail is, of course, product. You still want volume and texture — as you can see, SJP's pony is not tight or slick-looking — with just a tiny bit of shine. Ahead, The Zoe Report's favorite products for creating a textured ponytail with ease.
