This Fall Handbag Trend Looks *So* Expensive
When the weather starts to turn, your first order of business is to store open-toed sandals and slip dresses to make room for warmer, cozier alternatives. But as fall approaches, your go-to handbag also needs a little update, too. Earlier this year, luxe, croc-effect handbags started popping up as the cold-weather accessory of the moment, and as we head into the tail end of 2019, the trend shows no signs of slowing down. After all, the sleek, textured style adds both an element of structured sophistication, and plays well with other go-tos this time of year — like cashmere, suede, and velvet.
While croc isn't new per se — think of the structured top handle styles of the 1950s, or Prada's St. Cocco range of accessories — right now, the style is resurfacing all over Instagram, and is a favorite of both minimalists and bolder dressers. Trending iterations of the high shine, sumptuous material add clever twists to the traditional fabrication. The overall effect being more daring than dowdy, of course. These aren't the clunky satchels and dusty carry-alls that you may remember from your grandmother's closet or the local vintage boutique.
And for fall 2019, the croc-embossed bag has gotten a contemporary upgrade — in part, thanks to many emerging contemporary brands that are changing things up with geometric shapes, saturated colorways, and unexpected details. (Think: oversized buckle closures or handles that could double as jewelry.) Even old-school shapes like petite '90s styles or mod-era shoulder bags that you recognize feel fresh and upgraded for this year's cooler months.
From mini options that hold little more than the essentials to throwback-inspired shapes that modernize croc's heritage appeal, there's a little something for everyone this season. And don't forget the geometric-shaped shoppers for an elevated everyday commute. See all of your best options below.
Mini Bags
2019 is the year of the itty bitty bag, only this fall, look for styles in supple croc-effect fabrication. The subtle update adds a luxe touch to both a going-out look or a casual daytime look complete with mini tote. Look for tiny styles that pack a big punch, like metallics, sculptural details, and bold colors.
Modern Vintage
Designers are reimagining old-school silhouettes anew. Look for styles that feature vintage-inspired clasps and details, but in modern shapes or a fresh hue. Roomy totes like Mansur Gavriel's cult-favorite bucket bag or By Far's crossbody bags feel that much more luxurious in embossed leather or leather-effect material. Now all you're missing is an oversized peacoat and circular sunnies.
Geometric Carry-Alls
Go big or go home with carry-alls fashioned in bold, new shapes and classic cuts alike. An oversized bag can often feel a bit boring since it's more about its practicality than its look, but croc adds a certain understated luxury. Add a twist to the traditional shopping tote with Medea's playful take, or hold tight to TL-180's scrunched shoulder bag in sumptuous green. Staud's Rey bag was a favorite of the street style set during Fashion Month and this tactile version will have every outfit looking just a little bit (well, a lot bit) more expensive.
