This French-Girl Dress Keeps Selling Out, Jeanne Damas Knows Why
If you're infatuated with Jeanne Damas' style, you're not alone. The Parisian It-girl and founder of the label Rouje has amassed a cult following of women who love her effortlessly polished style. So much so, that every time the site re-stocks Rouje's Gabin dress — which Damas wears with ease — it sells out.
Such fervor is expected around a limited-edition drop or collaboration (a model perfected by the likes of Supreme and Nike), but to maintain hype season after season for a classic-cut dress is more out of the ordinary. Yet, leave it to Damas to have a sound explanation. "It's the simplicity of the design," Damas explains via email. "These silhouettes are not trends to me, but rather styles I've worn my whole life. My mother wore wrap dresses all the time as well."
Damas' take on building a wardrobe is more about versatility, designing pieces that women want to wear because they function equally well for work as they do for play. "A true French girl can wear an outfit during the day, then run home, touch up her makeup, switch her shoes, and she's ready for the night," she explains. This relaxed attitude toward dressing has earned Damas celebrity fans ranging from Selena Gomez to Sienna Miller who not only wear the pieces once, but over and over again.
"The best part about Rouje is that each piece can also be mixed and matched with others" Damas notes. Though collection to collection Damas may carry over a handful of her most-coveted silhouettes —including the Gabin dress and Gloria skirt — new prints and colors, along with season-specific picks keep fans of the brand coming back. "Every season I try to create timeless pieces based on French girl staples," she says. "But, this season feels like our first true fall collection; a real 'French girl' wardrobe. We introduced Italian knits and more full looks, including additional matching tops and skirts in fun prints."
So, how is Damas planning to update her favorite Rouje pieces in the coming months? "A good pair of boots like the Brigitte boots are perfect for Fall. I can't wait to wear them with the dresses and skirts from the collection," she notes. Adding, "I like to mix feminine and masculine pieces in the colder months."
