This Is The New Ear Jacket Trend

by Laura Lajiness Kaupke

When it comes to jewelry, uniquely delicate earrings are maintaining a moment in the spotlight. With jackets, climbers, cuffs and suspenders all currently commonplace, spirals are a refreshing twist (literally) on the jewelry trend—resonating with those drawn to dainty as much as those seeking more of a statement. Here, LA-based designers Sara Smith and Mara Rothbart of Smith + Mara give us the lowdown on spirals and fresh ways to rock them, whether you prefer a simple look or want to go fully layered. Get inspired ahead.

How Do You Wear Spiral Earrings?

"Spirals are worn through a single piercing, but because of their unique shape and design they give the illusion of multiple earrings. To put on a spiral, you put it in from the back of the ear, and once it's through the hole, you twist it forward until the stone is sitting flat at the bottom of the earlobe."

What Makes Spirals Fresh?

"What's really cool about our spirals is that they're more subtle and take up less 'real estate' on the ear, so they allow people to stack, layer and get creative. The spirals make people do a double-take because they can't figure out how many piercings you have and how it works."

What Pieces Are Needed To Pull Off A Layered Earring Look?

"There are really two directions you could go with a layered look. One is very symmetrical and more expected—by layering multiple spirals on the same ear or both ears. Or you could wear multiple spirals with the same stone or try multiple spirals with different-shaped stones."
