The Significant Meaning Behind Meghan Markle’s Engagement Ring

by Laura Lajiness Kaupke

Major congratulations are in order for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, who officially announced their engagement today at Kensington Palace. While we’re swirling with excitement over another royal wedding, set for spring 2018, we’re first fixating on Meghan’s stunning engagement ring.

Designed by Harry himself and made by Queen Elizabeth‘s jewelers, Cleave & Company (because, obviously), it’s expectedly striking and holds major significance.

The custom sparkler features a center stone accompanied by two side stones on a yellow gold band (Meghan’s favorite, per Harry in their first official interview today)—a classic design that symbolizes the past, present and future of a relationship (awww). His thoughtful design goes beyond tradition, however, reportedly possessing more personal sentiment.

The center stone is sourced from Botswana, which is close to Harry’s heart and a place he and Meghan have traveled to together. As for the side stones, they come from Princess Diana‘s own collection, following in Prince William’s footsteps of keeping their late mother closely tied to the occasion. We’re more than familiar with the fodder Kate Middleton‘s 12-carat oval sapphire has elicited, causing a surge in popularity for ovals and colored stones alike. We’re willing to bet three-stone engagement rings will soon take over as the next It trend for nuptials. Can’t beat a sentimental classic.

Here, peep Meghan’s gorgeous ring in all its glory, with a detailed shot we know you’re dying to see (her perfect manicure included). Then watch the betrothed couple’s full UK interview here.
